Catholic prelates urge Aquino to show humility

A number of Catholic prelates yesterday asked President Aquino to show humility by apologizing over the Mamasapano incident which killed 44 members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF).
Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez said that as the Commander in Chief, President Aquino should be humble enough to apologize and accept responsibility over the January 25 incident and not pass the blame to others.
“Humility is a sign of true leadership. He should accept responsibility. Genuine leaders never pass the buck,” Bishop Gutierrez said in an interview. “Humilty is truth – a Christian virtue.”
Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes agreed, saying, “PNoy should apologize. Humility is a great virtue needed by public servants.” He added: “Pride can lead to destruction.”
However, Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said he believes  an apology is not enough. “He should not only apologize. He should step down to give the forsaken 44 eternal rest and give the Filipino people a fresh start,” he said.
For Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, there is a need to punish and prosecute the ones responsible for the incident as lives have been lost.
Earlier, Senator Serge OsmeƱa III had said President Aquino should apologize for the Mamasapano just like what former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo did during the “Hello Garci” controversy, but Malacanang said it is unlikely for the President to issue an apology.
